Let's Take a Story Walk

It was a magical tale, as students listened with wide-eyed wonder! Superintendent Joseph Monastero transported himself and the students of Goosehill as he read a fairytale through the trees… walking and reading “giant-sized” book pages to our youngest. Classes gather close pointing and asking questions along the way, as they followed each other’s footsteps down the lane. It’s a perfect combination of reading and the great outdoors promoting early literacy skills, physical activity and time in nature. It fosters strong listening skills and provides wonderful teachable moments for discussion.

This fabulous “StoryWalk installation” was the result of a Goosehill PTG fundraiser erected and ready for reading fall 2023. A selection of books are chosen throughout the school year, with pages enlarged for classes to engage in outdoor group listening and conversation aligning with curriculum and growth mindset themes. Mr. Monastero shared the story of “How Rocket Learned to Read,” by Tad Hills. They loved asking questions and reflecting about what lessons they learned from Rocket, and his journey of learning to read just like them!
