Goosehill students channeled Van Gogh’s paintings of Sunflowers in art class with teacher, Katrina Albanese. Van Gogh’s sunflowers are among his most famous, painted in the south of France, in 1888 and 1889. The sunflower paintings had a special significance for Van Gogh: they communicated ‘gratitude.’ Ms. Albanese channeled her own unique creativity by having the students use balloons to make the flowers – brilliant!
What happens in CSH when you mix a little friendly competition with fierce camaraderie? A Charity Sports Night beyond expectation! It was reminiscent of a hometown Superbowl – where the crowds cheered for their favorite team! Banners and pom poms were flying high for Goosehill, Lloyd Harbor, West Side and the Jr./Sr. High School. Faces were painted, team jerseys and even fat heads swayed in the rafters.

March 4 was “Read Across America Day” which celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday each year by reading, decorating and even dressing up in his honor! In the words of Dr. Seuss, “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” At Goosehill, Library Media Specialist, Marissa Urso, engaged the students with a giant book share on the big screen, where they all read aloud together.
It was an unforgettable night of wonder, exploration and engagement, with the perfect blend of STEAM combined with a deep dive into the Humanities! In fact, this districtwide K-8 initiative offered so many exciting booths and activities to navigate – that each family received a map to begin their quest. It was a little like Dorothy following the yellow brick road, at every turn you didn’t know what would jump out at you next?
Goosehill is always bustling with excitement on the 100th Day of school! Kindergartners can barely contain their excitement to sing songs that they have practiced for weeks with music teacher Donna Zarrabi; what a show they put on! Parents and families were invited to join in on the fun at the morning assembly and then they were in for a treat as their children strutted the red carpet for a 100-Day tee shirt fashion show!
During the month of February, #CSH Unites spearheaded the project “PS I Love You Day” which was celebrated on February 9. This special day was created by Brooke and Jamie DePalma, West Islip graduates, who lost their father to suicide in 2010 while both were students at West Islip High School. PS I Love You Day started as a local initiative and has grown to include schools all over Long Island, New York state, and the country.
