  • Vanderbilt Museum Field Trip Fun

At Goosehill Primary, both K-1 students had the pleasure of discovering the wonders of the sky at the Vanderbilt Museum in March. Each grade focused on a specific topic. Kindergarten enjoyed “One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure,” a 27-minute full dome planetarium show that follows Sesame Street‘s Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from Zhima Jie, the Chinese co-production of Sesame Street. Together, they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon, where they discover how different it is from Earth. During their travels, they discover some basic but surprising scientific facts. For example, they can’t fly a kite there because there is no wind. The fuzzy friends then excitedly realize that children like to fly kites in both China and the United States! At the end of the show, Big Bird, Elmo, and Hu Hu Zhu pick a friendship star to remind them that no matter how far apart they might be, they can always look into the night sky and cherish their shared memories. The show aims to nurture a child’s natural sense of wonder about the night sky while forging cross-cultural connections, and bridging kids across nations through a common bond in learning about the sky together...

  • Colonial Day at West Side

West Side 4th Graders treated their parents and guests to a culminating musical performance celebrating Colonial Day times. Under the direction of music teacher, Leah Martin, students sang, danced and played instruments, as well as regaled us with all kinds of Colonial Day knowledge, including the amusing story of Yankee Doodle Dandy! The costumes were amazing as they took a step back in time to learn and teach their families even more about life in Colonial times. Every year, this social studies unit involves reading and learning about trade and merchant life with activities such as cross stitching, tin lantern making, ropes and tools. For over 20 years, these hands-on classroom projects of tin lanterns and cross stitch were brought to the elementary schools under the tutelage of educator, Joan McGee, from Preservation Long Island. Upon her retirement, she donated all of her supplies and tools so this tradition could be continued and carried on for years to come – thank you Ms. McGee! During this social studies unit, the students also visited the Lloyd Manor House. These field trips explore Colonial Day children’s chores and the games they played, various jobs of Colonials who learned trades such as a silversmith, shoemaker, miller, ship building, cross stitching, barn building, dress and hat making, and so many more...

  • Districtwide Sports Night Fundraiser for Corey’s Promise

Oh, what a night! The third annual district wide “Charity Event” sports night was held on March 13 for students, staff and families. This collaborative effort to bring the schools and community together has been a continuation of #CSHUnites initiatives and an ongoing goal of the Board of Education. By increasing family and community engagement, it is the hope of administration to maintain strong partnerships by offering these K-12 special events. The success of bringing the schools and community together for “Corey’s Promise” was truly inspiring as the crowds poured into the Ralph Whitney Field House. With over 1200 tickets purchased, this sold-out fundraising event was in remembrance of Corey Phelan, son of Jr./Sr. High Physical Education/Health teacher, Chris Phelan. Corey lost his battle to cancer on October 12, 2022 to T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. While Corey was in and out of hospitals battling pediatric cancer, he had a vision to help families suffering the same fate. He promised to help these families by offsetting the financial burden so that they could dedicate and focus more time on their child. ..

It is always a pleasure and highlight of the evening to hear from our students. They spoke with pride about the many achievements, events, honors, and ongoing activities, accompanied by a photo slideshow for everyone to enjoy. The Board recognized 4 seniors who achieved National Merit Finalist status: Ava Coco, Milan Lustig, Stephen Schmidt and Aiden Smith. Principal Daniel Danbusky acknowledged, “Tonight, we celebrate not just their achievements but also the dedication of their families, teachers and mentors who have supported them along the way. Beyond their impressive academic records, each of these students contributes meaningfully to our school community through leadership, service, the arts, athletics, or extracurricular involvement. They embody what it means to be role models for their peers. It is my great privilege to recognize these four outstanding students who have achieved a remarkable academic distinction that places them among the most accomplished scholars in the nation.” The Board agenda also included a discussion with Park East Construction, and a Budget Presentation Overview including questions and review from each school. • Fish Hatchery Feeding Frenzy!

The School District continues its long-standing relationship with our neighbors at the Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, including field trips to visit the turtles and warm water fish and amphibian life. During the first week of March, first graders loved their adventure as they continued to learn more about aquatic habitats. Groups rotated between the warm water ponds where they learned about small fish; what they eat and how they grow. They walked through the NY Stream Exhibit which was filled with windows that brought about much excitement as they found more turtles, snakes, salamanders and Log Perch fish. They learned how streams provide homes for fish, amphibians and reptiles as well as crustaceans, insects and plants; like wild water mint and cinnamon fern. But, hands down…the best part of the trip was being able to feed the fish and witness the frenzy of splashing as they feed...
