How can you make animated apples fall in slow motion? When learning to code, you quickly understand that "Sprite" is not a refreshing soda, it is the building block of a two-dimensional (2D) bitmap graphic object that can be a static image or animation that is integrated into a larger scene.
n December, Superintendent, Jill M. Gierasch, began visiting West Side School classrooms to share a book, introduce herself and get to know more students. It has only been four months since Ms. Gierasch joined the CSH family this past fall, and she looks forward to visiting Lloyd Harbor and Goosehill Primary to do the same and meet as many students as she can!
It was all about "Exploring Motion" in the Creative Learning Lab at West Side with Technology teacher, Ms. Margaret Diehl. With a clever name like Dash & Dot it was already sounding fun! Third graders teamed up with a partner to begin programming Dash on their iPad with a program called "Blocky." Algorithms are created to build driving block steps to make the Dash robot move.
Throughout the school year, both Lloyd Harbor and West Side elementary school collaborate with the DNA Learning Center. DNALC educators visit both school’s science classrooms to perform various experiments with 6th graders. The highlight, are the 6th grade field trips to the DNA Learning Center located on Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor.

West Side fifth graders were put to the challenge of creating a structure that could withstand an earthquake!
