  • Superintendent Search Update (May 20, 2024)

    The Cold Spring Harbor Board of Education wishes to extend its thanks and appreciation to the entire Cold Spring Harbor community for its assistance in providing input in support of the Superintendent search. We thank all who have responded to the community survey, as well as those who have participated in the various stakeholder meetings.

    The responses to the community survey provide valuable input that rank the importance of various characteristics we should seek in our new Superintendent. As shown on the survey summary, the greatest percentage of respondents (67.42%) had children currently in the Cold Spring Harbor schools. The category of attributes that were considered to be of the greatest importance (4.43 out of 5.0) was the candidate’s personal characteristics. The greatest importance of the candidate’s background areas of expertise (4.38 out of 5.0) was in curriculum/instruction. The specific attributes that were of the greatest importance (4.71 to 4.50 out of 5.0) were as follows:

    • Demonstrates high moral and ethical standards (4.71)
    • Effectively establishes a good rapport and open communication with staff (4.66)
    • Demonstrates strong human relation skills (4.53)
    • Understands effective teaching practices (4.51)
    • Is open to new ideas and suggestions (4.50)
    • Demonstrates patience, understanding, consideration and courtesy (4.50)

    Our search consultants, Western Suffolk BOCES, met with 34 representatives from 5 different stakeholder groups, including Central Office, Building Level, Bargaining Units, PTA (CPC and PTG), and Community Agencies. The summary of the stakeholder feedback mirrors the input garnered on the community survey and focused the priorities of the district on education, leadership, vision and communication. Western Suffolk BOCES has stated, “Stakeholders repeatedly expressed pride and support of their school system.”

    The identified characteristics, issues and needs have been incorporated into the candidate profile and will guide the interview process.  The Board is currently interviewing semi-finalists and will give another update in the upcoming weeks.
